Let me introduce you to the Hôtel de Pierre, also called Hôtel de Bagis or Hôtel de Clary, one of the most impressive Renaissance hôtel particulier (palace) in Toulouse, France ! The Toulouse people call it the Hôtel de Pierre (stone mansion), because its façade is entirely made of stone, which was unique in Toulouse in the 17th century. The monumental facade was erected between 1610 and 1615 at the request of Gabrielle Guerrier and her husband François de Clary by the architect Pierre Souffron, assisted by several sculptors and stone-cutters who succeed each other on the building site ! It is richly decorated with a carved stone decoration: pilasters, trophies of arms, garlands, fruits. François de Clary placed on the capitals of acanthus, eagles and suns which recall his coat of arms. Building this facade was a way for Clary to show the inhabitants of Toulouse his wealth and power. Even of it was also admired for it’s virtuosity, the Hôtel was criticized for his indescent appearance. The stone was very expensive and Clary was accused of stealing them. #art #renaissance #mannerism #artoftheday #architecture #toulouse #france #mansion #luxury #sculpture #instaart #patrimoine #patrimoinefrancais #heritage #history #magnifiquefrance #17thcentury #picoftheday #photooftheday #pictureoftheday #instadaily #palace #armor #decorativearts #arthistory #instagramhub #historicalplace #livinghistory at Toulouse, France

This was hell to photograph but what are you going to do? The Man of Sorrows, painted by Michele Giambono (Michele Giovanni Bono) in 1430 during the late Gothic period so the Medieval influence is very real before subsequently being subsumed into Renaissance art. For myself, I'm drawn to the artistry, the progression of history blatantly depicted in this image, but most of all, the historically accurate frame. I feel aggressively charged about frames that compliment the work of art even though the study of picture frames in general, and of Renaissance frames in particular, is a discipline in its infancy. Historic frames have always been the poor cousins of important collections of paintings and drawings. Throughout most of the modern (that is, postmedieval) era, original frames were discarded whenever a painting changed ownership, and a new frame more suitable to the work of art’s new surroundings was provided.* In this painting, depicted upright in his tomb, his hands extended to display his wounds, the blood and crown of thorns rendered in relief, this exquisitely rendered Jesus has been conceived as a focus for meditation. A diminutive Saint Francis receives the Stigmata and becomes a surrogate for the viewer. Elaborately framed, with the reverse painted to imitate porphyry - a stone with imperial associations - the picture would have been a precious object of devotion, perhaps for a Franciscan friar. The pattern on the deteriorated background derives from Islamic textiles. . . . . . . #gothicart #medieval #medievalart #middleages #painting #islamicart #romanesqueart #renaissance #art #arthistorian #arthistory #arts #artwork #artist #artoftheday #educationmatters #education #academia #phdlife #books #photography #photooftheday #picoftheday #pictureoftheday #photo #photographer #ig_captures #color #jesus #religiousart

“Dying is a sleep Sleep is a rest Sleep is a sanctuary...” -An excerpt from the poem, Soak, by Eiko Otake, the artist in residence at The Cathedral of St. John the Divine. Eiko is a Japanese performance artist and is part of the famous duo known as, Eiko + Koma. Together they have done pieces reflecting on death with Offering in 2002,,Death Poem in 2005, and Mourning in 2007. (These are more of their recent works as they have been active since the 1970s). . . The picture above is of the tomb effigy of Elizabeth Boott Duveneck, who’s final resting place lies just outside of Florence. This cast is from 1927, but the original piece/her death was in 1891 and is reminiscent of Gothic and Renaissance funerary monuments. It even features a palm (to the left in the picture above), which is a Christian symbol of victory over death and eternal sleep. . .

Again a bit of Dutch art history! The works you see on these pictures are by THERESE SCHWARTZE (Amsterdam, 1851-1918). In her time she was a succesful and reknown portrait painter. Schwartze comes from an artistic family. Her father Johann Georg Schwartze was a painter, her sister Georgine was a sculptor and the daughters of her sister Clara Theresia, Lizzy Ansingh and Thérèse Ansingh also became artists. In 1906 she married the editor-in-chief of the Algemeen Handelsblad, Anton van Duyl. In 1889 she won the gold medal at the International Exhibition in Paris with an inventive Self-portrait. Among others, she portrayed members of the Dutch royal family. The fame she gained through this led to more and more commissions. Several of her works can be found in the Rijksmuseum and the Jewish Historical Museum in Amsterdam. On 22 July 1918 her husband, Anton van Duyl, died. For Schwartze, who was in poor health and tried to hide it from everyone, the death of her husband was a blow she would not overcome. Her health deteriorated rapidly until she died of a sudden illness on 23 December 1918. Half a year after the painter's death, a foundation was founded which, among other things, is dedicated to Dutch portraiture. Since 1920 it has awarded the Thérèse van Duyl-Schwartze Prize to artists under the age of 35.
