Hauling a Hustler
On 12 March 1957, a specially modified Convair B-36F was used to carry B-58 airframe 4A on a ferry flight from Carswell Air Force Base in Texas to Wright-Patterson AFB in Ohio. The B-58 airframe was being delivered there for a series of static tests. For the flight, the nose and engine nacelles, along with other components, were removed from airframe 4A. The B-36 had to have its inboard propellers removed to provide enough clearance for the B-58 airframe’s wings. The B-36F used was Air Force serial number 49-2677. The B-58 airframe transported was produced as a test article and was never assigned a USAF serial number. Several views of this odd coupling are seen above, either while the B-36 was on arrival or after it had landed at Wright-Patterson. -
I wanted to also take the time to thank everyone who participated in my ask me a question story feed. Y’all asked a ton of good questions and I had a fun time answering them. I might be doing that again sometime, if that’s something everyone doesn’t mind.
