Happy International Yoga Day 🧘‍♀️ ⠀ ⠀ My yoga journey began after a life already as an Olympic hopeful competitive gymnast that was battered, fairly broken, and unable to walk without a back brace (ya true story). Yoga became a personal space that competition was removed. ⠀ There are lots of things “I can’t do” in yoga. Whilst it would be nice to do some of the crazy wild things we see on Instagram, I don’t have a need to go there, beyond a natural occurrence as part of a progressive process. If it happens - wonderful, if it doesn’t then OK. Yoga is not poses to me, though of course I am extremely grateful that my body is able to do any of the things it still can as a yogi, climber and more. ⠀ ⠀ Yoga is process. It is release. It is meditation. It is exploration and discovery. It is self reflection, not self berating, it is digging deeper and seeing what arises, it is not having a single thought at all. Yoga has brought me back from competitive injury more than once. My journey to eventual yoga training in New York @stralayoga with @tarastiles, teaching, and eventually through to the @climbflow practice was born out of the restorative, transformative power it gives me - a place of bringing strength and softness together. I have chosen not to get sucked into the competitive, self-comparative and sometimes even aggressive environments that also exist within the yoga space. ⠀ ⠀ And that’s really what I hope for for anyone who practices yoga - for there to be joy, healing, relief as much as progress, strength, and being more bendy. It’s the mental journey that accompanies the physical one that makes it what it is for me.
