That Boston life 🥶❄️⛄️ Having lived in Sydney my whole life and always picking summery holidays abroad, I had never actually seen snow before until I moved to Boston for my postdoc! It’s bloody cold here that’s for sure 😅 Snow is very pretty but it can also be a bit of a pain. You definitely need to have the right gear (layers upon layers of clothing plus good snow boots 🥾) I bought a whole set of snow gear as soon as I arrived! 🧥 🧤🧣 It’s all part of the fun of living in a new country! What are your top tips for surviving a super cold winter? 😊❤️ I’d love to hear them in the comments section! at Cambridge, Massachusetts

Does anyone else think F-12 media is very pretty 😍. I’m using this media to grow up some HT-1080 cells to play with in chemotaxi experiments. HT-1080 is a fibrosarcoma cell which are known to be very evasive, making them a perfect model cell for migration assays. at Sudbury, Ontario

Happy #internationalwomeninscienceday to all my fellow lab ladies. In addition to drawing science art, my first passion is science. . I’m a PhD student @hsnsudbury research institute. My project is focused on a novel compound we discovered. I have found that our compound has anti-inflammatory capabilities and demonstrates great potential to treat autoimmune conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis. Now that I have determined it’s capabilities, I must unravel its mechanism 👩🏼‍🔬🔬🧪 at Sudbury, Ontario

It fascinates me how much and how little we know about the galaxy we live in and space as whole. It also fascinates me how little diversity still exists in STEM fields today. The STEM industry is solving important issues like global warming, medical breakthroughs and inventing technology that is changing our lives. However, white males represent over 50% of the STEM workforce while only making up 30% of the population. Studies at University of Illinois and Stanford show that groups of homogenous people tend to hold back ideas and opinions because they assume everyone thinks the same way that they do. Whereas diverse groups make more of an attempt to share ideas and convince others of their solutions. We deserve more perspectives when solving these important issues across science, space, engineering, and medical fields. • • • • • #spaceistheplace #space #galaxy #stemgirls #womenengineers #womeninstem #youinthelab #lablife #makeithappen #girlpower #girlbosses #girlbosslife #hustlehard #feminism #feminismisforeverybody #sisterhood #girlgang #girlssupportgirls #womensupportingwomen #itsnicethat #designeveryday #theeverygirl #makersmovement #typespire #ilovetypography #greattype #typegang #strengthinletters #passionproject at Brooklyn, New York

When @of_stilettos_and_pipettos reached out to me to make an outfit inspired by my research, the first thing I thought about was western blotting. Because everyday, I’m westerning! 😅🙌 The straps are anode and cathode wires and the skirt has photoreceptors because I’m now in retina research! Check out the western blot bands on the skirt too 💯 Thank you so much to the very talented @of_stilettos_and_pipettos for making this! 🔥🔥🔥 at Boston, Massachusetts

Spent the day in this hood with the “wound maker” which can create scratch wounds in a 96-well format, all at once. Then after scratching the cells in the wells, I can treat them with various drugs to determine their efficacy at altering migration. Very excited to get some more data from these experiments 🤓 at Sudbury, Ontario

Farewell Sydney! I’m off to Boston for my postdoc at Schepens Eye Research Institute of Harvard looking at diseases of the retina. Going to miss my friends and family so much but super excited to be joining a new lab in a really amazing university! 🇺🇸👩‍🔬 at Sydney Airport

Here’s my one of my videos from yesterday’s scratch wound experiment 🤓🧪 . The scratch-wound assay is an assay commonly used to measure cell migration. Cells are grown to confluence and a thin "wound" is introduced by scratching with a pipette tip or a wound-maker. . Cells at the wound edge polarise and migrate into the wound space. Images are captured at the beginning and at regular intervals during cell migration to close the scratch. The images are then compared to quantify the migration rate of the cells. at Sudbury, Ontario

My little piece of science at home 🔬🏡 It may not be the most interesting photo, but it’s one that means a lot to me. . In my living room I have the preprint of my first first-author published paper 📝👩‍🔬, next to the advice for the layout of a scientific paper scribbled for me as I struggled to write the first draft of a research proposal for my PhD a long time ago... 👩‍💻 . In research, sometimes it can feel like your experiments are going nowhere or that you’re always writing and revising the same things 😩 - so it’s nice to have little things around that remind us how much we’ve grown and how far we’ve come 😌🧫🧬 . #keepupthegoodfight at Sydney, Australia
