I just so happened to be in one of the most romantic cities in the world on Valentine’s Day, so while wandering around the streets and alleys of Guanajuato, Mexico, I discovered many places that have stories of love and romance attached to them. Possibly one of the most popular romantic spots in the city to visit and snap a photo is El Callejón del Beso, which translates to “The Alley of the Kiss”. When two lovers pass through this alley, they must kiss on the third step in order for their love to last forever.
Among the many winding, claustrophobic alleys and thoroughfares in the Mexican city of Guanajuato, this alley stands out among all the rest both for its incredible tightness and for the tragic Romeo and Juliet-esque romance that is said to have taken place there. According to local legend, a wealthy family lived in one of the buildings that helped create the alley, and their daughter, whose bedroom window looked out onto the alley, fell in love with a young man who was a miner. The father forbid his daughter from seeing this man because he was poor and lower class, and he wanted to marry her off to a wealthy husband. The man managed to save up enough money to rent out the room in the building across from hers with a window that was directly across from her own as well. At night, they would secretly meet and kiss across the tiny alley. Unfortunately, the girl’s father found out, and in a fit of rage, stabbed his own daughter to death right in the heart (how symbolic). Since the man was now heartbroken, he threw himself to his death in the alley below. Their tragic romance is a testament to true love, and hopefully the next time I come here, I’ll be able to share a kiss with a certain special lady instead of posing here alone on Valentine’s Day lol. ❤️😘 at El Callejón del Beso
