We Rise by Raising Others sounds difficult and noble, right? It sounds like a thankless task. Let me give you another perspective:
An ambitious young man wanted to work for a prestigious company. After interviewing, he clinched a junior position. Then, he aimed for his next goal – a manager position with more prestige and pay. He came in early and stayed late everyday so the boss could see him “working hard”. To his horror, after five years, a new employee was promoted instead. The young man demanded an explanation from his boss.
The wise boss simply said, “Will you do me a favour?” “Sure,” the young man replied. “Go buy me some oranges. My wife needs them.” The young man left and returned. The boss asked, “What kind of oranges did you buy?” “I don’t know,” came the reply. “You only said buy oranges.” “How much are they?” “I'm not sure. You gave me $30. Here’s your receipt and your change.” “Sit down,” the boss said. “Pay attention.” He called the new manager and asked him to do the same job.
When he returned, the boss asked, “What oranges did you buy?” "There were many types, I didn't know what to get. You said your wife needed them so I called her. She said it's for juice. I asked the grocer for a recommendation. So I bought Valencia oranges and dropped them off at your home on the way back here. Your wife was delighted." "How much were they?" "Well, your wife said she's expecting 20 guests; that's alot of oranges, so I asked for a bulk discount. They're normally 75c each but I got them at 50. Here's your change and receipt." The boss smiled, “Thank you; you may go.” The young man stood up. "I know what you mean," he walked sadly out of the office.
What's the difference between the two? You may say one went the extra mile, was more efficient, or paid more attention to detail. The true difference is their INTENT. One's intent was money and prestige, the other's was to achieve the desired results of his employer.
