When do you think is the right age to begin dance?
There is no age limit to learn any new art or skill. But earlier, the better. I started my Bharatnatyam classes from the age of 4 and I feel it was a perfect time. For me, it wasn’t just a hobby but my favorite time. I have to admit I was a bit lazy and unless my mother persuaded me I wouldn’t practice but even then dance used to come automatically to me. For me, dance was an enjoyment. I wasn’t a student who wanted to prove others I was the best or neither did I want to be the teacher’s pet. I wanted to enjoy my time. I never wanted to compete with my dance mates but to enjoy learning each dance pieces which was filled with amazing stories and characters.
When I look back, it is those memories I cherish the most.
Every child is entitled to have the best possible childhood. It shouldn’t be only about studies, hard work, pressure. It should be a time when they can be happy with what they do. Some children would display their talents at a very young age and we have to just brush it up with proper guidance and classes. Sometimes a little more persuasion is required from our side as parents because it's only after a while they would recognize their own talents. It is up to us to suggest ways to include healthy habits and explore his/her talents. For this, I am always grateful to my parents for not giving up on me and pushing me to move forward with dance.
Though dance is an activity every child loves, we should not just blindly push them towards it because we love it. Here age is not the major factor but the child’s interest.
If a child is genuinely interested in dancing he/she should be encouraged, as it needs a lot of practice and should be consistent. Dance is a healthy activity which can play an important role in building a strong foundation for a child’s personality.
Including a co-curricular activity such as dance in a child’s routine, from the age of 5, will only help a child to be more flexible, more confident and more social.
