VICTORIA MOSQUE OPEN DAY
On Sunday 17 March 2019, the Albanian Australian Islamic Society (AAIS) participated in the Islamic Council of Victoria’s (ICV) annual ‘Victorian Mosque Open Day’. The AAIS’s Albanian Mosque was one of 21 open to the public across Victoria. The open day was to run from 10am to 4pm, however visitors began respectfully arriving well before the official start time in significant numbers. Throughout the day, approximately 1,500 people of various faiths and backgrounds attended with families and friends, young and old, from the community.
Following the recent devastating events in Christchurch, New Zealand and the loss of 50 innocent Muslim lives, this year’s Victorian Mosque Open Day was also a day of great sadness, grief and mourning for all those attending.
AAIS volunteers warmly greeted visitors and provided tours of the Mosque and other facilities of the Society. Many AAIS volunteers were asked questions about the features of the Mosque, the Islamic faith, the prayer process, the history of the Albanian Muslim community and founders of the Mosque. Visitors also commented on the value of reading the ‘Prophet Lineage Tree’ and AAIS founding members’ board.
Imam Dr. Bekim Hasani also delivered a special prayer (dua’a) for the Christchurch victims and the community which was observed by the visitors. Immediately after the midday (dhuhur) prayer, a funeral prayer was performed by the Muslim congregation in respect of the brothers, sisters and children lost in Christchurch. Following the prayer, Adam Bandt, MP (Federal Member of Parliament) formally addressed the congregation with a strong message of unity.
Insha-Allah, the AAIS will continue to be proactive in organising and also seeking opportunities to participate in programs and events, like the annual Victoria Mosque Open Day, that bring people together.
