I know the girls call them “edges” now, but these will forever be “Baby Hairs.” Because when I was fourteen you were shamed for having them. Baby hairs were for girls with electronic belt buckles, white eyeliner, and the triangle center part with the swoops on the side. Baby hairs were for the girls who swore they loved Ciara and stood by her after that rumor “my cookies stay in a jar” was a euphemism for a sex change operation. Real baby hairs are for girls who ask for no vegetables in their fried rice. Respect this truly Black femme art form, consider yo’self blessed. • • • • #blackfemmeart #blackaesthetic #naturalhairstyles #blackart #includescoiffure #blackhair #highart #beauty #diy #heavenlybodies #blackgirljoy #herstory at Harlem

“To name ourselves rather than be named we must first see ourselves. For some of us this will not be easy. So long unmirrored in our true selves, we may have forgotten how we look. Nevertheless, we can't theorize in a void, we must have evidence. And we—I speak only for black women here—have barely begun to articulate our life experience.” #lorraineogrady at Central Harlem

"The Black female is assaulted in her tender years by all those common forces of nature at the same time she is caught in the tripartite crossfire of masculine prejudice, white illogical hate and Black lack of power. The fact that the adult American Negro female emerges a formidable character is often met with amazement, distaste and even belligerence. It is seldom accepted as an inevitable outcome of the struggle won by survivors and deserves respect if not enthusiastic admiration." -Auntie Maya• • • • #JanivaEllis #MayaAngelou #newmuseum #triennial #blackgirlmagic #painting #illustration #color #nyc

Today is the 63rd Anniversary of the attack on Congress, led by Lolita Lebron. The Anniversary of the Ponce massacre is on the 21st. Never forget that America has been perpetuating genocide on Puerto Rico since 1899. We are a territory with 2nd class citizenship, we are not Americans, we will forever be thought of as "excess population." Let the month of March be the one you learn your history, and donate your time, items, or money to the island. #boricua #lolitalebron #rafaelcancelmiranda #andresfigueroacordero #irvinfloresrodriguez #independence #puertoricannationalist #hurricanemaria

"...Prevailing conceptions of the self ignore the multiple, sometimes fractious sources of social identity constituted at the intersections of one's gender, sexual orientation, race, class, age, ethnicity, and so forth. Structural domination and subordination are thought not to penetrate the “inner citadel” of selfhood. Likewise, these conceptions deny the complexity of the dynamic, intrapsychic world of unconscious fantasies, fears, and desires, and they overlook the ways in which such materials intrude upon conscious life..." -Feminist Perspectives on the Self• • • • #TheStudioMuseum #Harlem #Fictions #femme #blackcontemporary #installation #domesticity #genevievegaignard #art
