Beer & breakfast: the pub hostel reinvented. All those sad, underused upstairs rooms in pubs could have a bright and useful new future as an affordable place for travellers to lay their heads...or those not fit to drive home! Hopkins’ ‘radical re-appraisal’ of the Smith Campus Center at Harvard adds communal space, daylight and greenery without compromising the brutalist original. The building was opened up to create new communal areas and reinstate its status as a ‘front door’ to Harvard, providing eateries, shops, event space, offices and social and study areas. Many facilities will be shared by students and the local community. This image shows the triple height, skylit Harvard Commons which replaced Holyoke Pavilion. Greenhouse gas emissions. Natural resource depletion. Industrial pollution. These are the three horsemen of the environmental apocalypse threatening the sustainability of earth’s delicately balanced ecosystems and, therefore, human health and wellbeing. As demand for products and materials that protect the planet have risen, so the industry has gradually reacted, improving outputs and reducing costs. Whether out of passion, ethics, professional duty or merely self-interest, most architects and other specifiers are strongly motivated to ensure that the materials and products they specify are, as far as possible, sustainable. Two homes by HCL Architects, squeezed into an unobtrusive corner of Fulham, flaunt their sustainable credentials – and work them hard. Rather than tucking the energy generators away on the roof, the architect took an upfront approach that not only made the panels a key design feature but solved tricky overlooking constraints as well. The solar screens create an independent, 5.55m high structure in front of the semi-detached mews houses. Passersby that glimpse the facade glittering in the sun may well stop in their tracks – these houses are quite a contrast to the local conventional Victorian properties. Acclaimed Polish-American architect Daniel Libeskind believes architecture should evoke emotion, and his numerous memorial and cultural projects do just that, from the Royal Ontario Museum to the Jewish Museum in Berlin. Who doesn’t love a suburban home? Suburbia, that early 20th century typology, still holds a fascination for the architect, despite the rise of the larger metropolis and megalopolis. Even in our modern world, the aspirational middle-class values it embodies retain their draw. History has charted suburbia as a battleground for artistic movements –from Mod to punk and now bedroom-generated electronic music; and that’s tracked by competing architectural styles: arts and crafts, neo-vernacular, modernism... even post-modernism. Inspired by this, our competition #SpanningSuburbia, in partnership with the UK’s largest steel lintel manufacturer, @IGLintels invites architects to offer us their own vision with a design for a 21st century suburban family villa. There will be a cash prize of £2,000 for the winner and £500 for each of the three commended entries! Entry deadline: 11:59 pm, 14 May 2019. Today marks 💯 years of #Bauhaus! It’s a compelling story at a formative time in the development of modern design. Established by Walter Gropius in Weimar, Bauhaus pioneered a pluralistic educational approach that embraced both applied and fine arts as well as functionalism, and encouraged collaborative working. In addition to admitting significant numbers of women, the progressive school was open to foreign students as well as Germans which was revolutionary at the time. You can find out more about the movement in this article: http://ow.ly/x12r50q0oo6 Words: Pamela Buxton Image: Volker Staab's competition winning design for a new building at the Bauhaus-Archiv in Berlin Image credit: Prof Volker Staab / Staab Architeckten #CelebratingBauhaus #Bauhaus #bauhausdesign #thinkdifferently #modernarchitecture #monochrome #WalterGropius #architect #architecturephoto #architecturalmovement #100yearsbauhaus

This row of three little terraced houses in a mews off Portland Place is literally on our back doorstep and a hidden architectural gem. @thomas_croft of Thomas Croft Architects has created a clever design to maximise space and light in such a compact area with a gorgeous neoclassical facade: “The main architectural debate to be had here is not about layout but the matter of hierarchy: should a very subsidiary backstreet such as a mews – traditionally for coach-houses and servants’ quarters – assume something of the grandeur of the masters’ main facade?" Would love to hear what YOU think? It was an absolute pleasure to hear esteemed author and professor Mark Swenarton speak today at RIBA about his book Cook’s Camden for our #ribabookclub event. His book provides a riveting and detailed account on how architects including Sydney Cook and Neave Brown innovated social housing in the 1960’s & 1970’s. The groundbreaking project shifted urban housing from high rise blocks to a return to streets with front doors. If interested in reading more, the book is available from @ribabookshops online or in store! #ribabookclub #riba #modernhousing #architecture #cookscamden #goldmedal #neavebrown #moderncities #urbanliving #camden #london #concretejungle at RIBA

Looking down the atrium. Columns were precast while slabs were made in situ. The flawless connections make them look simple but in reality they were far from it. Credit: Alan Williams Read the full article 'UCL Student Centre is wild inside' on RIBAJ. You don’t have to be many years past university to incorrectly assume what is meant by the term ‘student centre’. For most people not involved in higher education or the construction of these buildings it simply sounds like a new name for the student union or, if you are a bit more up-to-date, one of the hubs – like Wilkinson Eyre’s University of Exeter Forum – that was developed in the mid noughties as a congregating place for students where they could fulfil their every administrative need from enrolling and paying fees to finding accommodation. #RIBA #RIBAJ #RIBAJournal #architecture #architects #archilovers #architecturelovers #building #architecturephotography #buildings #archidaily #arquitectura #architect #architexture #UCL @ucl @nha_llp #students #university #highereducation
