When it comes to #farmmamas, not all broody 🐔 hens are created equal! *
Case in point: this lineup. One homicidal chick killer 👿, one that’s never been broody, and one determined to be a mama but a total rookie. None of them will be raising chicks. Danerys (my Buff Orp) and Arya (my mottled Cochin) are the only two I trust wholeheartedly 🤗
In my experience, hen-raised chicks 🐥 are more independent, self-sufficient, and tend to be hardier and navigate coop dynamics far better than incubated/brooder chicks. However, some broody hens can start out great, then decide to change plans midway and leave eggs or chicks cold and dead 😩😩. Some broodies are murderers and may take out their own chicks, and other’s hatching around them☠️. Some don’t have enough standing in the flock hierarchy and may not protect their babies from nastier, aggressive hens.
Sooooo, with all those concerns, who would let broodies raise chicks? 🤷♀️ I do, and from past experiences (good & bad), I know my star 🌟 players because they’ve demonstrated their abilities time and time again. —Dedication to sitting, only leaving the nest daily to eat, drink and 💩 —Acting like a psycho if other hens approach the nest 😜
—Not leaving the nest at all during the “lockdown” phase of hatching 🐣 —Once chicks have hatched, keeping them safely close by
—Valiantly protecting their brood by any means (verbally telling others to CLUCK OFF or physically pecking or drop-kicking potential offenders)
—Bonus points ✨for adopting chicks that aren’t their own
Supervise and care for your broodies during this delicate time 💕. If you don’t want them raising chicks, break them quickly so their health doesn’t suffer. If you’re worried about other hens being aggressive, separate the broody hen and give her a maternity space that’s secure from the flock. You can transition them back into the flock when the chicks are older & stronger with their mama. Cheers to all those amazing #farmmommas out there that go above and beyond to care for their broods! Sharing today for two stellar Farm Mamas, Dennita @the_red_barn_farm and Brittany @camoandfeathers for this week’s #❤️myfarm!! I’m tagging some friends to play too!
