Photograph by @PaulNicklen // I love exploring the cross-section between art, science, and conservation in my photography. For me, each image needs to tell a story. I set up this split-shot, half below and half above the water, to show the icy world in which this leopard seal lives. This picture is as much about sea ice as it is a charismatic predator. To see why my heart was racing when I took this photo #FollowMe on @PaulNicklen. #Nature #NatureLovers #PhotoOfTheDay #Antarctica #LeopardSeal

Photograph by @simoncroberts. The Royal Bath and West Show, Shepton Mallet, Somerset from the series #MerrieAlbion. British summer months are prime agricultural and county show time. Part tradition, part joyous eccentricity, a county show is a celebration of the countryside: from floral arrangements to sheep shearing, the British Cider Championships to cheese displays. The Royal Bath and West Show is one of the biggest agricultural shows in the country often welcoming over 150,000 attendees. The historic show is organized by the Royal Bath and West of England Society; it was founded in 1852, and toured the country before a permanent home was established at Shepton Mallet. Each year a member of the Royal Family visits. Here Princess Anne can be seen here presenting a rosette to the ‘British Limousin Champion’ in the Exhibitor Breed Beef Group. Photo by @shonephoto (Robbie Shone) // Ain Dhab is largely a river cave with some higher fossil galleries at the far end of the streamway. Extremely slow moving water made it more challenging for the scientists to carry out verlocity experiments. We're following the work of a group of researches from the Tunisian Geological Survey and European Research Institutions (UK, Germany, Austria and SISKA in Switzerland) who are looking at changes in rainfall patterns through time. Several of their field sites lie inside Djebel Serdj, which hosts some of the largest caves in Tunisia.

The nature preserve is about 130 km (80 miles) southeast of Ulaanbaatar and is home to many animals and birds, Including Argali Mountain Sheep. Photo by @BrianSkerry A newly hatched leatherback sea turtle scrambles toward the ocean, about to experience saltwater for the first time in Trinidad. Only about 1 in 1000 hatchlings will make it to adulthood due to predators. But nature has compensated for this and female leatherbacks have multiple clutches of hundreds of babies. What these animals cannot overcome are the anthropogenic stresses, such as getting caught in fishing gear, poaching and climate change and as a result have struggled to survive. Leatherbacks never stop swimming once in the sea; they remain in perpetual motion. Their lineage dates back more than 100 million years, older than dinosaurs. Photo by @TimLaman. An osprey in Indonesia’s Raja Ampat Islands gives me a stare as I capture this photo from a healthy distance with a long lens… “no Mr. Osprey, I’m not about to steal your fish”. Osprey are one of the most widely distributed bird species on the planet, spanning all continents except Antarctica. So they are certainly not unique to Papua, yet the rich marine habitat and healthy forest nearby with good nest sites makes Waigeo and other islands here ideal habitat for this very successful bird of prey. Please follow me @TimLaman to see more of Papua’s amazing birdlife. #YearoftheBird, #Osprey, #birds, #YearoftheBird, #Papua, #Indonesia, @TimLaman.

Photo by @simonnorfolkstudio Kamchatka brown bears (Ursus arctos beringianus) are the largest carnivorans in Eurasia. Here photographed emerging from steam in the Valley of The Geysers in Russia's Kamchatka peninsular. The first Europeans who went to Kamchatka observed that the bears here were relatively harmless compared to their Siberian counterparts. However, in 2008, a platinum mining community in the region was besieged by a sleuth of bears who killed two guards and prevented workers from leaving their homes. Kamchatka remained closed to Soviet citizens until 1989 and to foreigners until 1990 and the bear population thrived to that point, but since the demise of the Soviet Union and the opening up of the region to mineral exploitation and international trophy hunting, the bear population has been put under pressure. Photo by @amivitale | Panda keeper Liu Juan looks after young panda cubs in the incubator room at the Bifengxia Giant panda base in Sichuan province, China. Chinese scientists and their international counterparts cracked the puzzle of successfully breeding pandas in captivity after decades of disappointment. They are now on their way to successfully saving their most famous ambassador and in the process putting the wild back into an icon. I have recently published my new book, Panda Love, featuring my long-term panda work made on assignment for National Geographic. A shaggy Icelandic horse below Eyjafjallojokull Volcano | photo by @salvarezphoto Iceland is an island of serious micro-climates. A combination of ocean currents, the jet stream and big mountains mean that the weather can change in just a few miles. “Dawn” at my hotel that morning was a blanket of grey rain leaking from the sky, but just a few miles away in the shadow of Eyjafjallojokull Volcano the weather was remarkably different. Sun and clouds competed for the morning sky above this horse’s pasture. The light didn’t last long but while the sun shone things looked spectacular. Follow me, @salvarezphoto for more. #iceland #horse
