"The Crossing" reflects the extraordinary risks migrants are forced to take in times of crisis, literally gambling for their lives. -Shimon Attie "Shimon Attie: The Crossing" opens this weekend in the Imprint Gallery at MMoCA. The exhibition was developed in partnership with the University of Wisconsin-Madison Art History course Design Thinking for Exhibitions. This thought-provoking, eight-minute, video installation explores the current global refugee crisis. The film opens with seven young adults sitting around a slowly spinning roulette table. Throughout the film, participants place bets, disappearing one by one until only one man remains. At the end of the film it is revealed that the young men and women are actually Syrian refugees. Attie uses the metaphor of gambling to illustrate the risk Syrians undertake to find safety in a time of great turbulence. Design Thinking for Exhibitions is taught by professor Anna Campbell. The class develops an exhibition over the course of the academic spring semester, using MMoCA as a critical training ground for hands-on application. Shimon Attie. "Many of my family members taught me the value of a well-told story and so it is that I value the stories held in objects." Sonya Clark is celebrated for conceptually sophisticated, finely crafted work that builds upon the familiar-a comb, beads, a dollar bill, a flag-to tell stories about history, culture, race, and identity. “Hemi”, pictured above, is part of Clark's “Wig Series”, which re-imagines the Fibonacci mathematical series through the rituals and traditions of African and African American hairstyling. Sonya Clark is a Professor of Art at Amherst College in Massachusetts. She will offer a talk on her work this Friday evening. Admission is free; reservations are required to guarantee seating. Reservations can be made at Sonya Clark. "Hemi", 1998. #sonyaclark #mmoca #craft #artisttalk #hair

Come hear Distinguished Research Fellow and textile artist Sonya Clark speak at MMoCA this Friday at 7 pm. As a child, Clark was surrounded by craft and culture. Clark’s artwork is deeply inspired by her Afro-Caribbean heritage and the craft skills of her maternal grandparents from whom she gained an appreciation for material culture. Clark’s work is on display now in the MMoCA Lobby. The talk is held on the occasion of the fourth Stephen Fleischman Lectureship, which honors the 25th anniversary of Stephen Fleischman’s tenure as the director of MMoCA.
