I think we're all realizing that the mainstream surfing media (and media in general) isn't going to give us what we want when we ask nicely, and the numbers will never be in our favor, so we have to make it ourselves, and create our own spaces and art to enact the change we want to see. It took Surfer Magazine 60 years to dedicate an issue to women. Isn't that hilarious? I've wasted a lot of time waiting to ask permission to express the way I feel, and the things I want to see are just as valid as anyone else. I think we're all waking up to the potential in our community.
