We're on our way! This past week we've had so many opportunities to share our work with the community. From the @wildnorthernway wild meat tasting event, to the @takingstepswarriorwomen documentary premier, to the amazing panel and film events at the @shesummitsorg festival, having the chance to share the work of Forest and the Femme has been such a pleasure! Seeing the overwhelmingly positive response from the community was a great reminder of how important the healing power or nature really is to us all. Thank you to @arcteryxkitsilano @arcticfoxkitsilano @drcarlacupido @jess.odowd and everyone else who supported us this week to get the word out. It's been incredible! We can hardly believe that our next season is just around the corner! To start the season off on the right foot, we're kicking off a pre-season fundraiser for the month of April, with the aim to raise $10,000! It’s a lofty goal and we’ll really need the support of our community to reach it.  Our program is truly unique among services available to women living in the Downtown Eastside and now, more than ever, it is so important for women to have access to the healing powers of nature. Today we're reflecting on how our work aims to encourage new possibilities for women. Our aspiration is to create a future in which marginalized women will experience a sense of belonging, a source of hope, and an opportunity to feel optimistic about their place in the world. To achieve our mission, we believe that nature has the power to heal and transform, creating strengths that will carry throughout all aspects of our lives.  Since we began programming in 2012 we have taken over 100 participants on over 400 trips, which is almost 2,500 hours of time spent in nature! Our program is unique in that it connects women living in Vancouver's DTES with nature, places not otherwise accessible, and strives to be trauma-informed and low-barrier. We are so looking forward to another season!  We hope you can follow along with our adventures this year. #natureheals #allmyfriendsarewild

*Gratitude time* Thanks to you we raised $4,148 for our 2019 programming during our year end campaign! Your generosity and support are so appreciated! Our hearts are full thinking about some of the milestones we reached this past year. In 2018, we surpassed 2,500 hours spent in nature since our founding in 2012. That's a lot of hours! Our programming featured more educational workshops than any year before, and we had outings all the way into November. Thank you for following along on our adventures this year, and for your kindness and support! #natureheals #allmyfriendsarewild ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ pc 📷 @wakefieldpro at Downtown Eastside

In her words: "These trips are like a dream. Something that you always wish for and then they happened and then you wish for them more. It’s like the dreams that you want to keep having because they make you feel so happy in a way that your heart hasn’t felt for a long time. You know when you wake up laughing? That’s what these trips felt like. It’s just really good and true feelings." . . Today is the last day to donate in 2018. In her words: "This year was all about socializing and getting me active. Not being afraid to go past my boundaries. And eventually my boundaries kind of became my comfort zone. My comfort zone became the trees and the rocks and the water. It actually brought me closer to the water even though I am so scared of it. Maybe next year I’ll learn how to swim." 🗻🏞️🌊💚🌿 Thanks to you, we have raised $3,718 towards our year end goal of $5,000! Help us reach our goal and continue our work next year! There are still two days left to donate and receive a tax credit for 2018. ⬆️ Check out the "Donate" tab at the link in our bio

Many of our volunteers get involved with us because of the healing that nature has brought to them, and their wish to make that healing more accessible to others. In their words: "There is so much evidence that proves without a doubt that access to nature has positive health benefits. I know from personal experience how much getting outdoors helps with anxiety, depression and self-esteem. I don’t even know if I would still be here today if I hadn’t discovered how to help support my mental wellness through nature. It literally changed my life. We don’t expect anyone’s life to change because of Forest and the Femme because the barriers that the women face are so much more complex and the world can be a cruel place for them. But I know that they deserve the opportunity to get out there and feel all of those good feelings too." at Downtown Eastside

We are lucky to have dedicated and passionate volunteers who care so much about our work! In their words: "There has been a devastating overdose crisis that has hit the DTES especially hard and the amount of grief and loss and heartache in the community is astounding. The community needs hope to get through these dark times. There needs to be good things. There needs to be ways to help women to heal and to cope with all this grief. Even just to forget about it for the day. Every little bit helps when you are trying to get through grief. Forest and the Femme gives the women something to look forward to, something to be hopeful about, happy stories to tell, and ways to help physically manage the emotional toll that the crisis is having on the women. Because F&F is so needed, and such a specific and important service that is otherwise missing in people's lives. The importance of nature, of access to the land, of providing opportunities for trust and positive relationships is so real, and so few organizations offer this in a way that is accessible." at Downtown Eastside

The benefits of being in nature can be so profound! Being in nature brings an opportunity to reset and recharge in the moment, but can also spark shifts in how we see ourselves and interact with our surroundings. Our service providers partners see these lasting impacts in F&F participants. In their words: "When women returned from the hikes, they were so happy and calm. There is still so much pride and joy shared when women reflect on the F&F hikes." at Downtown Eastside

We work closely with other service providers in the DTES, who see the benefits of participation in Forest and the Femme outings in the women that they serve! In their words: "I believe that a person's own ability to manage their emotional/spiritual/mental/physical wellness, has a huge impact on their abilities to effectively deal with their outside world! On these special trips into nature with these groups of women, I saw women helping one another, encouraging one another and sharing with one another. These are beautiful and essential skills people need to foster to build strong, supportive and healing communities." at Downtown Eastside

We wouldn’t get to the great places that we go without nourishing our bodies with wholesome, fresh and delicious foods. Our participants can’t afford healthy foods with their income assistance. They simply don’t have opportunity to eat well enough to support being physically active. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We work together all season to build health and wellness through nutrition, exercise and socializing to get our hearts and minds and bodies strong enough to take on challenges. We spend a lot of money on food because it’s a critical piece of our programming. Please, help us provide nourishment and happy memories to our participants with a tax deductible donation. $60 provides us with food for a group activity. Link in bio 👆 at Somewhere Beautiful

For the past few years we’ve been learning how to grow and harvest food at the Tu’wusht project. We’ve learned so much from the women there over the years. We’re very lucky to spend time on that sacred land learning about the cycles of nourishment. 🥦🍓🌽🥕🍅🥗
