One day you wake up and your only child is big enough to navigate the neighborhood sidewalks alone. He visits friends and zips around on his bike or scooter. He lets you know he’s going over to so-and-so’s house and don’t worry Mom, he’ll be just fine. He’ll keep his phone on and check in with you every so often. No, he doesn’t need to take a snack and no he doesn’t need you to come pick him up. One day you wake up and realize that whether you like it or not, your only child is growing up and is within reaching distance of becoming a full-blown functional adult human. And your insides will swell simultaneously with pride and love. And panic. And it will be okay. Because it has to be. And it always is. It just is.
