Appalshop, along with partners #CommunityFarmAlliance and @pinemountainsettlementschool , are building support for programming that links the present to the past through foodways in eastern Kentucky. Your tax-deductible contribution to the THESE ROOTS RUN DEEP project will help fund a series of community forums, events, and workshops in Kentucky’s Letcher and Harlan Counties that will enhance education and skill sharing, public programming, and archival/collecting activities based on local foodways, culture, and agriculture. Our fundraising goal by Jan. 30 is $50,000. THROUGH JAN. 30: all donations matched 1:1 by the National Endowment for the Humanities! Our #bestof2018 media moments are worth a second look! Being featured on PBS @newshour opened a lot of doors for Appalshop and really made the case for investing in Appalachia. You can do just that at Appalshop.org/donate. . . Appalachian teachers rallied for investment to #protectpensions and much more this year. Our @wmmt88.7fm coverage of teachers on #strike from Letcher County to West Virginia really caught your attention here on Instagram. We’re grateful for this audience and hope homegrown media can play an important role in organizing for better quality of life in Appalachia and beyond in 2019. Happy New Year!

We have a #solstice #giveaway happening on our Facebook page. Like this post & comment your own Appalshop love story here to be entered! We’ll announce the winner of a ‘Since 1969’ merch bundle on Christmas Eve. We'd love to hear from you over at appalshop.org/donate too. We're getting close to our goal! ❄️ ⚡️ 🧢 “Being introduced to the work of Appalshop through AMI was a transformative experience for me as a young person. I spent my whole life internalizing stereotypes about my home. Appalshop helped me heal from that. Their impact on me honestly changed my life, and I don't know where I'd be if it weren't for this incredible work." -Angel Hill, Appalachian Media Institute Alum

Congratulations, voters in town, throughout Letcher County & across the country! You rallied and brought home another Levitt AMP Whitesburg Music Series victory – for our community, our businesses and our families. This is an all-around win for the Whitesburg summer scene, and we can't wait to see you all downtown in 2019. #LetcherCulture #levittamp at Appalshop

Kathy learned to love Appalshop while teaching English in Pikeville, KY where she raised her family. To show the nation how talented mountain people are, she published the book 'Whistlin’ and Crowin’ Women of Appalachia'. Her daughter Laura, pictured together here, went on to work at Appalshop for years. Kathy is retired to North Carolina now and supports Appalshop for our regional reporting and women's leadership. What about Appalshop moves you? Tell us at appalshop.org/donate.

Is Appalshop part of your family? We believe in the power of stories to unite, across generations. But making meaningful art takes more than stories. Appalshop relies on support near and far. Donors like Brett who give every month, sustain our work. Can you give today, as a one time gift, or recurring, to support Appalshop and the power of story? appalshop.org/donate

Take it from a Kentuckian who has studied and taught film on both coasts! Christina Hardebeck and her twin sister, Courtney, visited Appalshop for the first time last year. They supported Appalshop this year and to hear Christina tell it, "are two girls who left Kentucky to explore new opportunities but have felt drawn back to our home state and particularly to the work in Whitesburg." There is nothing quite like coming home. Invest in the magic of home this season at appalshop.org/donate. Link in bio, forever & always. Amen.
